A noun is a naming word.
It gives a name to a person, place, animal, or thing.
Everything around us has a name.
Examples:
- Persons: father, nurse, teacher
- Places: market, hospital, Goa
- Animals: lion, crow, horse
- Things: table, bag, flower
So, nouns help us to identify the world around us.
2. Types of Nouns
In Class 3 (ICSE), you will learn four main types of nouns.
A. Common Nouns
These are the general names of people, places, animals, or things.
Examples:
- boy
- city
- bird
- river
These names are not special, so we do not begin them with capital letters (unless at the start of a sentence).
B. Proper Nouns
These are the special names of people, places, days, months, or things.
Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter.
Examples:
- Aarav (name of a boy)
- India (name of a country)
- Monday (name of a day)
- December (name of a month)
Every Proper Noun is special.
C. Collective Nouns
These nouns name a group of people, animals, or things.
Examples:
- a bunch of grapes
- a flock of birds
- a team of players
- a herd of elephants
- a bundle of sticks
A collective noun tells us about many together.
D. Abstract Nouns
These nouns name things that we cannot see or touch, but we can feel.
Examples:
- love
- kindness
- courage
- honesty
- happiness
These are ideas, qualities, and feelings.
3. Why Are Nouns Important?
Nouns are the building blocks of sentences.
Without nouns, we would not know:
- who we are talking about
- what we are talking about
- where something is happening
Example:
“The cat drank milk.”
Here, cat and milk are nouns.
Without them, the sentence won’t make sense.
4. More Examples of Nouns
Persons - doctor, pilot, sister, chef
Places - park, school, Delhi, temple
Animals - zebra, frog, eagle, squirrel
Things - cup, bicycle, chair, balloon
5. Rules to Remember
✔ Proper nouns always start with capital letters.
Example: Ritu lives in Mumbai.
✔ Common nouns begin with small letters.
Example: The girl has a doll.
✔ Collective nouns refer to groups.
Example: A troop of monkeys.
✔ Abstract nouns cannot be touched.
Example: Her bravery saved the puppy.
